If your pregnancy was a surprise, or even if you’re just not where you want to be financially, there are a few simple steps you can take to save for baby each month. Not all of these things are the most comfortable, but they are definitely worth a try if you’re serious about saving.
First, take a look at your budget.
If you have extra room in your budget, immediately set that money aside to save for baby. If you don’t have extra money in your budget, it’s time to do one of two things: make more money, or spend less of it!
Ways to Make More Money
1. Pick up extra shifts at work
If this is something your job allows, go for it if you can. Personally, my unit is always in need of extra staff, so picking up a shift or even just a few hours is easy. I don’t do it much because I already loath working full time, but it’s good in a pinch!
2. Get a second job
When I was really looking for extra money to pay for our wedding, I applied to all sorts of part time positions like Target, Kirklands.
I was never offered anything, probably because I didn’t have the right experience. But it would have really helped to get a couple hundred extra dollars every month if I had.
3. Help someone with something, for a price.
Anything you’re good at? Building a website? Mowing someone’s lawn? Cleaning someone’s kitchen (COME TO MY HOUSE!!)? Sell your services online or get the word out to family and friends. You can probably make at least $100/month if you’re consistent.
What better way to practice for your own child!? Again, let friends and family know you are looking to babysit.
The nice thing about this job is if you’re reasonable with pricing, people will continue to come back to you. Child care is SO expensive these days, so if you make them an offer they can’t refuse, you’re golden!
5. Find jobs online
Pinterest has been a blessing for me when trying to find odd jobs online. It’s how I found my current side job on Rev.com.
If you’re serious about earning side money online, just do a quick search on pinterest for online jobs. Gold mine!
Ways to Spend Less Money
1. Cut cable
Right now we spend close to $180 per month on internet, cable, and home security (the last of which we don’t even use).
Personally, I don’t watch cable TV unless it’s This Is Us, but I could totally catch that at my mother-in-law’s house. Unfortunately, my husband is big on cable TV so that’s not an expense we’re looking to cut.
But if we did, we’d probably save at least $60/month. Over 9 months, that’s $540 to save for baby!
2. Eat at home/pack your lunch
We also are big offenders here. What can I say? I basically hate all things domestic, so I pack my lunch only once in a blue moon. I cook only when I’m in the mood.
Last month we spent over $300 eating out at restaurants! $300 per month!! It’s definitely on my list of things to cut down on.
If we cut down even just to $200/month, we could save $900 over 9 months.
3. Get rid of those subscription boxes
Thankfully, I have not fallen prey to these things. There are so many to choose from and I even have friends trying to get me hooked on them too! With each one costing $10+ per month ($60 was the most expensive I saw), that’s a ton you could be saving, especially if you’ve subscribed to more than one!
Over 9 months, save $90-$540.
4. Trade in your car payment for a paid off car
If you’ve got a long way to go on your car and if your car payment is eating you alive, consider trading it in for an older model that will be paid off.
Sure, it’s a downgrade, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. If your car payment is $200/month, you will have $1800 in 9 months to save for baby!
5. Get quotes from other insurance providers
You never know, you could be seriously overpaying for car insurance (or other type). The first time I did this, I lowered my insurance premium by HALF! It may not be more than a few dollars, but every dollar counts, right?
6. Break up with the gym
For now, the gym isn’t that important. You can still go for walks outside and do bodyweight exercises.
But for the most part, pregnant women aren’t supposed to be lifting really heavy objects or doing exercises that require quick changes in direction. Don’t waste $20/month. For 9 months, give the gym a break and do stuff at home or outside.
Save at least $180 over 9 months by canceling your gym membership.
7. Give something up
Daily coffee at Starbucks? Mani/pedi every two weeks? Think of something you can live without, and try giving it up. I make my coffee at home from K-cups. I bite my nails, so there’s no reason for a manicure 😉
